The IAM is a charity based in London but with local groups throughout the United Kingdom. The IAM has the aim of improving road safety by encouraging drivers and motorcyclists to take and pass it's advanced tests. There are tests available for those using cars, motorcycles, HGVs and towing caravans.

For most people the best route to preparing for the IAM tests is to join their local group. Local groups are independent of but affiliated to the IAM. Observers who are members of the local groups and of the IAM provide guidance for candidates preparing for the IAM tests on a voluntary basis.

The IAM also has a commercial arm (IAM Fleet Training) which can provide advanced training on a commercial basis to companies with large or small fleets of vehicles.
