Condition
Monitoring of Rotating Machines |
|
|
The talk will provide a summary of the subject of
condition monitoring. Firstly John will
describe the reasons for and benefits of condition monitoring and will
discuss how we can measure the success of condition monitoring. He will then describe a novel way of
reporting on the results of such monitoring (Total Asset Health Reporting)
that he believes is unique to Machine Monitoring Systems Ltd. Finally John will describe some of the
technical aspects of electric motor testing. |

Quicksilver
World Water Speed Record Attempt |
|
|
Partners
Evening Australia has held the
World Water Speed Record for over 20 years, sternly resisting competition
from America. Now, the Quicksilver team
aims to break Australia's hold on the Record and return it to Britain, where so
much water-speed history has been made. The World Water Speed Record
currently stands at 317.60 mph (511.11 kph). To achieve such astronomical
speeds, water conditions must be near-calm - and the boat itself must
overcome water resistance by raising its hull clear of the surface and
skimming across it. This lecture by Nigel
Macknight will describe the challenges faced in his attempt on the World
Water Speed Record |

If data is free - what price data integrity? |
|
|
We take for granted the re-use of existing data and datasets. We construct new data driven and data
intensive systems based upon existing datasets at our peril. Without the required data integrity not
only the new system but also the enterprise may rest on poor foundations. Recent news items describe data error rates at the DVLA as 1-in-3, yet
this data forms the basis of congestion charging and for data used to issue
speeding fines based upon the recognition of number plates by roadside speed
cameras. Collectively we have learnt how to create the software and hardware
components so that we attain the required RAMS targets. Such targets remain unattended for the
data used by these systems. Deriving
data integrity requirements provides a set of data oriented targets. Examination of the logistics of the data
supply chain highlights many of the weaknesses based upon reliance on
existing datasets. This presentation describes several catastrophic accidents based upon
a lack of data integrity and moves on to describe a method for identifying
data integrity requirements, the data supply chain and suggests possible
solutions. |

Speed Cameras: Friend or Foe-Fact and Fiction |
|
|
Joint Lecture with GIES The Humberside Safety Camera Partnership commenced operations in April
2003. In the first year alone there
was a 53% reduction in casualties at camera sites. Yet despite this and the huge benefits to society they are not
universally accepted. This lecture explores the history of speed detection and the rules governing partnerships. It explores the type of equipment used and
its accuracy as well as exploring some of the myths surrounding camera
partnerships and speed detection. |
